Brolga

Long ago in the Dreamtime, there was a beautiful young girl named Brolga who was known as the finest dancer in all the land. From a very young age, she would rise early each morning and practise on the plains near her camp, copying the movements of birds, animals and the wind. She also created her own dances inspired by the trees, Spirits and the land. In time, her dancing became so graceful and special that tribes travelled from far away to watch her perform.

One day, Brolga went alone to dance on a dry red plain beneath her favourite coolibah tree. As she danced in the shade of its branches, an evil Spirit named Waiwera saw her from his home in the Milky Way. Captivated by her beauty and grace, he spun himself into a great whirlwind, or willy-willy, and swept down to the earth. With a roar of wind, he surrounded Brolga and carried her away.

When Brolga’s tribe realised she was missing, they searched for her and found only the coolibah tree and the winding path left by the whirlwind. They followed its trail for many days until they came to a hill overlooking a small plain. There they saw Waiwera holding Brolga captive. The tribe rushed forward, throwing spears and boomerangs, but Waiwera, knowing he could not escape, swirled around Brolga and made her vanish before their eyes.

The tribe watched as the whirlwind rose slowly into the sky, and in its place stood a great old coolibah tree. Then from behind the tree appeared a tall, graceful grey bird. Instead of flying away, it stretched its wings and began to dance with the same elegant movements Brolga had once made. As the bird danced and then flew off into the sky, the people understood that Waiwera had transformed Brolga into a bird. From that day on, that bird has been known as the brolga.
