The Handicraft - Kar-e-Kalamdani
Kar-e-Kalamdani is the local name for paper mache, a Kashmiri cottage industry introducted to the Kashmir Valley in 15th Century by the Mongul Prince Zain-ul-Abadin along with a number of other Persian crafts. There are many steps in the process, creating pulp from recycled paper, molding and finishing the shapes, handpainting (naqqashi) and varnishing.
