About the Artist
Growing up on Kuku Yalanji country Caleb has always felt a strong connection to the land and enjoys hunting, conservation artefact making. He specialises in Traditional Fire Stick making which has been passed down through generations. Fire Sticks have been a part of the Aboriginal culture since it began, they are part of the history and they play a vital part in the Aboriginal culture.
Caleb has always had a love for making jewellery and collecting materials from the bush. He had a collection of seeds and had been wondering how he could implement them into his art. An idea sparked when he was sitting with his family and heard the story of his late grandmother playing with the seeds as a baby to keep quiet so that the government protectors would not forcibly remove her from her mother and tribe. Many thousands of Aboriginal children were affected by the Stolen generation and fortunately Caleb’s Grandmother was lucky enough to escape this ordeal due to her mother’s quick thinking. Many of Caleb’s art pieces are a direct impact of his cultural up bringing and his love for traditional hunting and gathering
