About the Artist:
Cornelia was born adjacent tot he present day barge landing at Pirtangimipi (Tiwi Islands) around 1930. When she was a young woman she would assist student weavers to acquire skills and knowledge in this artform
About the design - Jilamara
During ceremony on the Tiwi Islands a serios of "yoi" (dances) are performed some are totemic (inherited from the person's mother) and some serve to act out the narrative of newly composed songs. Participants in these ceremonies are painted with the different natural ochres in varying designs transforming the dancers in some cases providing protection against recognitition by mapurtiti (spirits)
